Pennsylvania Association of Non‑profit Organizations’ Seal of Excellence

The Pennsylvania Association of Non‑profit Organizations (PANO) is the statewide membership organization serving and advancing the charitable nonprofit sector through leadership, advocacy, education and other services in order to improve the overall quality of life in Pennsylvania.

PANO helps charities become more efficient and effective through collaboration, cooperation and the sharing of resources and information. PANO helps charities succeed together where they can not succeed separately.

The Standards for Excellence® Ethics and Accountability Program offers a voluntary Accreditation (compliance with all 67 Standards) and a Standards Basics recognition (compliance with any Standards that have legal or regulatory components). The program focuses on accountability, transparency and developing a strong culture of ethics which are all hallmarks of a sustainable organization.

Good Samaritan Services is proud to be able to display this Seal of Excellence awarded by the Pennsylvania Association of Non-profit Organizations. Good Samaritan Services was awarded certification under the Standards for Excellence program, which is bestowed only to the most well-managed and responsibly-governed non-profit organizations that have demonstrated compliance with 55 specific Standards for Excellence based on honesty, integrity, fairness, respect, trust, responsibility, and accountability.

Good Samaritan Services has met, complied with, and integrated the Standards for Excellence into all of its activities to successfully complete this voluntary certification program. Good Samaritan Services was first awarded this Seal of Excellence in June 2012. Learn more about the Standards for Excellence Program.

Why The Standards Matter

The Standards for Excellence Program is a national program established to promote the highest standards of ethics, effectiveness, and accountability in nonprofit governance, management, and operations, and to help all nonprofit organizations meet these high benchmarks. The Standards offer an A-Z resource on practices that create stronger organizational governance, management, policies and procedures, and legal compliance at any stage of a nonprofit’s lifecycle. The centerpiece of the program is the Standards for Excellence®: An Ethics and Accountability Code for the Nonprofit Sector. It identifies six major areas of nonprofit governance and management which include specific benchmarks and measures that provide a structured approach to building capacity, accountability, and sustainability in your organization.

  • Standards ensures that our organization is operating with maximum efficiency and for maximum impact. By reviewing all policies, procedures, financial reporting, program evaluation and fundraising practices, Standards provides an external review of those operations and governance components which then gives an impartial picture of our organization’s strengths and areas for improvement.

  • One can equate the Standards for Excellence Accreditation as the “Good Housekeeping Seal of Approval” for nonprofits, or in the business world the ISO 9000.

  • Accreditation is a great way to demonstrate that our Board of Directors and leadership are careful stewards of donor dollars. The accreditation process ensures that our organization internalizes non-profit practices that make our organization stronger and that demonstrates accountability and transparency

  • Non-profits look to funders, donors, and supporters to sustain our mission. By completing the accreditation process, our organization can confidently assure those funders that our organization is dynamic and accountable; and that they are making a sound investment in our mission.

  • The Standards for Excellence Program demonstrates organizational sustainability and a commitment to operational excellence.

  • The completion of the Standards for Excellence Accreditation demonstrates a high level of engagement by the board of directors and leadership team.
