We all know the stereotype, a homeless male holding a cardboard sign on the sidewalk. But homelessness takes on many faces, often ones you wouldn’t expect.
A woman living in her car, fleeing an abusive relationship. A brand-new mother staying in a hotel with nowhere to call home. An individual who lost their job due to illness or sudden layoffs and no longer has the funds to pay their bills.
These are real people. Real stories. And here at Good Sam, we have heard them all. Our goal is always to respond with care and compassion so that people from all demographics can receive the resources they need to get back on their feet and have a safe roof over their heads.
And that by no means excludes women.
Homelessness among women has been on the rise. Since 2022, homelessness among women has risen by 12.1 percent and women now make up around 40% of the unhoused population.
The numbers are staggering—but the reality behind them is even more heartbreaking.
For many women, homelessness isn’t just about losing a home. It’s about fleeing violence. Many unhoused women have been in domestic violence situations and are often faced an impossible decision: stay in the abusive relationship or step into homelessness on the streets, the latter only putting them at further risk of violence.
No one should have to make that choice. So, here at Good Sam, we are passionate about ensuring that neither option becomes a reality.
As Phoenixville Women’s Outreach becomes a part of Good Sam, we are able to expand our ability to serve women facing homelessness. With this merger, we are excited to now be able to offer short-term housing in both Chester and Lancaster Counties!
Together, we can be a part of the solution to make sure no one, mother, child, man, woman, has to face a night without a roof over their heads to call their own.
Will you come alongside us in this journey?
