At Good Sam, we are always looking for ways to bring creativity, safety, and connection into our approach to therapy.
In recent group sessions for children in our program, our in-house licensed therapist invited a few unexpected guests into the room: live baby chicks. Yes, they were irresistibly cute—but more importantly, they sparked deep, heartfelt conversations about survival, safety, and care.
Together, the children explored questions like:
➤ What do baby chicks need to survive?
➤ What do YOU need to feel safe and cared for?
➤ What do you do when you’re uncomfortable or unsafe?
➤ How would someone else know?
These aren’t always easy questions to answer, especially for kids who are facing housing instability or trauma. But, framing the conversation around the chicks helped create a safe space for children to share about their own feelings. The result? Honest conversations, meaningful reflections, and real connection.
This is the beauty of therapy at Good Sam. We offer free mental health services to every adult and child in our program, including graduates. Our therapist has the freedom to be creative and use trauma-informed approaches to meet people where they are and help them move toward healing.

Therapy isn’t one-size-fits-all. Sometimes, it looks like a quiet conversation. Sometimes, it looks like art or music. And sometimes it looks like a circle of kids, holding baby chicks, talking about what it means to feel safe.
This is what hope looks like. This is Good Sam.
