In Pennsylvania, the average rental cost of a one-bedroom apartment is $1,478. That means that someone earning minimum wage would need to work over 47 hours a week and spend every single penny on rent to afford a one-bedroom apartment—leaving nothing left for other essentials. This makes finding housing challenging if not nearly impossible for anyone trying to get back on their feet.
This was the story for three guys living in our Kennett Square housing. Rick came to Good Sam after living on the streets. Jay was in rehab seeking treatment for mental health. Matt was looking to better his life so he could be a better father for his daughter.
All three of them landed in our program at the same time and were taking steps to get back on their feet. However, with a fixed income, none of them were able to afford an apartment on their own. That’s when they came up with a solution: rent a house together!
After several months of searching for an affordable home that met their needs, Rick, Matt, and Jay found one and moved in November. Now as roommates, they not only share the burden of rent but also life as they look out for each other like family.
Here at Good Sam, these three found the help they needed to rewrite their stories and the community they needed to make that transformation happen. And we are so proud of them!
