Kay's Story: Back on Her Own Two Feet

Kay’s life now is completely different from her life a year ago and the proud smile on her face says it all.

A single mother of three children, Kay made ends meet by working a part-time job at a local hospital and picking up plenty of extra shifts. Until the day it stopped.

Unable to pay her bills or rent, Kay suddenly faced the ugly reality of eviction. “It was pretty scary because I was getting eviction papers and threats and that does not feel good,” she shared. “I already lived in low-income housing and to even think about finding another place to live and come up with the security deposit, it was very overwhelming.”

That’s when she reached out to Good Sam for help and was paired with one of our Resource Coordinators. While Good Sam helped her with
rent for a couple of months as a part of our supportive housing program
, Kay worked on finding another job, learning budgeting tools and paying off debt.

Months later, she has both a full-time and part-time job and is working on a degree in nursing. She also completed our matched savings program, putting aside what she describes as “a little nest egg in case anything like this would ever happen again.”

“It feels good to be in a good place,” she shared. “It feels good to pay your rent on time, it really does. It’s [a] feeling [of] security, which you need when you have children.”

Kay’s smile is a testimony to our mission here at Good Sam as we focus on helping people transition from housing crisis to stability. It’s a joy to see her back on her own two feet, saving money on top of it!
